Do emotional feelings have meaning?

The Meaning of Our Emotions

"Your intellect may be confused, but your emotions will never lie to you."

— Roger Ebert

Hello AWMS subscriber :

We could blame our public schools for failing to offer instruction in emotional intelligence, but in fact, there was very little research available before the early 1990's. Though enormous academic strides have been made in the last 30-years, there remains little awareness or interest among the general populace in the meaning and management of their emotional feelings.

By following this newsletter and our Ageless Wisdom podcast, you'll not only uncover your emotional wisdom, but the doorway it offers into refined values, ethics, kindness, compassion and spiritual awareness.

High EQ and self-awareness begin with personal responsibility — accepting ownership of our emotions. We must give-up victimization and accept that our emotions are not done to us by others. They come from us, whether as responses to others or as our moods and attitudes reflect our disposition from moment to moment.

If someone caused you physical pain, it would reflect your injury, but say nothing about the person who caused it. So it is with emotional feelings. They come from within, whether hurtful or joyous.

Further, emotional feelings cannot be wrong. What we think of them can be wrong, but as signals and symptoms, our emotions cannot be false.

Thinking logically about hurtful feeling rarely helps us understand their meaning. In fact, rumination usually makes things worse. The secret to discerning the meaning of an emotion or set of feelings is found by immersing yourself without resistance. Let the heartache have its way with you. Feel the emotion fully, without judgment, even if you fear it will crush or extinguish you.

The only way out is through. As you feel your hurtful emotions without reservation, you will understand them, and they will pass.
