The Christian belief that individual human souls are created by God at conception dominates Western culture to this day. Yet, this was not always so. Before Roman Emperor Constantine convened the first Council of Nicaea (now Iznik, Turkey) in 325 AD, many of the early Christian fathers believed in the preexistence of the soul.
In the mid-19th Century, the great Transcendentalist, Ralph Waldo Emerson penned an essay called the Oversoul that cultivated a renewed interest in the subject, especially as it relates to the Hindu concept of the Atman.
